About Urdu language: Urdu or more precisely Modern Standard Urdu is the national language and lingua franca of Pakistan, and an official language of six Indian states and one of the 22 scheduled languages in the Constitution of India. It is estimated that there are between 60 and 70 million native speakers of Urdu in the world. In India, Urdu is spoken mostly in places that were bases for Muslim Empires in the past. These include parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra (Marathwada), Karnataka etc. In Pakistan, Urdu is spoken and understood by the majority of the population in some form or another.
